The ruffled water-lilies are sighing around her;
At times she rouses, in a slumbering alder,
Some nest from which escapes a small rustle of wings;
- A mysterious anthem falls from the golden stars."
STORY
William Shakespeare’s Hamlet (c. 1599–1601) was a tale of love, murder, madness, and heartbreak, of which the character Ophelia met her end, drowning in a brook, but is forever immortalized in the visual arts. Polonius calls Ophelia a “green girl,” linking her to flora.“Her flowers suggest the discordant double images of female sexuality as both innocent blossoming and whorish contamination; she is the ‘green girl’ of pastoral, the virginal ‘Rose of May’ and the sexually explicit madwoman who, in giving away her wild flowers and herbs, is symbolically deflowering herself” . The bracelet is inspired by Waterhouse’s painting of Ophelia (1910 oil in canvas) , reclining on a floral field. Ophelia becomes a part of the landscape, the same lost and helpless flower, like the white daisies in the grass and on her dress.
